Oleg Holosiy made this untitled oil painting on canvas, known as "Washing", using a darkly muted palette, it’s a bit like watching something materialize from the shadows. The brushstrokes are loose, kind of frantic, which gives the whole scene a sense of urgency, or maybe just unease. I am drawn to the materiality of this piece. The paint is applied in layers, some thin and transparent, others thick and opaque, creating a surface that feels both chaotic and deliberate. Look at the way the blue is handled in the center, it’s almost like a vortex, pulling you into the depths of the painting, those blues against the browns and blacks, it’s visually arresting. Holosiy was exploring similar themes as the German Expressionists, like Kirchner, who were also grappling with the darker aspects of the human condition. But Holosiy brings his own unique perspective. It’s a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, a way for us to make sense of the world, even when it doesn’t quite make sense.
