Gerhard Richter created this abstract oil on canvas in 1995, using techniques that emphasize the fluidity and behavior of the paint itself. Richter's process involves layering and manipulating paint across the canvas. He uses squeegees to drag the paint, blending and blurring the colors, and creating a surface that is both chaotic and controlled. The appearance of the work is influenced by the viscosity of the paint, the angle and pressure of the squeegee, and the sequence in which different colors are applied. These are the techniques of house painting, blown up to the scale of “high art”. In this work the process becomes part of the visual language, reflecting a society saturated with images and information, where the act of seeing is mediated by technological processes. By embracing chance and process, Richter challenges traditional notions of artistic authorship and invites viewers to contemplate the materiality of the painting itself, asking us to reflect on the nature of art-making in an age of mechanical reproduction.
