This untitled work on paper was made by Mark Rothko, and look at the way the ink just seems to bloom across its surface. It's so fascinating, because drawing is really about process. There's a real fluidity to the marks here, and the way each form seems to float on the page. Look at the bottom of the image, where the forms are grounded by sharp, mountain-like shapes. The ink is thin and translucent, making the surface feel very immediate, like he wanted you to witness the image coming into being. There's a kind of playful ambiguity to it all. It reminds me of a Cy Twombly work; both artists evoke a sense of open-endedness, where meaning isn't fixed but constantly evolving. Art, for me, is always about embracing that ambiguity and allowing for multiple interpretations.
