Richard Tepe made this photograph titled 'Digging for wild rabbits in the dunes near Vogelenzang'. This image from the Netherlands shows a hunting scene, which was probably common at the time. Dunes like these were spaces where individuals could hunt and forage. Hunting at the time would have had a significant impact on the economic life of the local community. It provided food and resources to those who couldn't afford it, or those who were in need. As a historian I would be interested to research how widely this practice was socially accepted. Was this an activity open to all? Or was it restricted to particular classes or professions? The meaning we attribute to images changes over time, and is dependent on the social context. We need to consider the past to fully appreciate art.
