This etching showing a “Speaking figure on a bier” was made by Daniël Veelwaard, likely in the Netherlands in the late 18th or early 19th century. In it, we see a jumbled crowd scene as a man lying on a bier is carried aloft through the streets. Through its caricature of the figures and the staging of public life, this print offers a window into Dutch social life at the turn of the 19th century. It likely offers a commentary on contemporary politics. Prints like this were often produced to be included in periodicals or pamphlets, and could reach a wide audience, offering both entertainment and social commentary. Art historians might look to the archives of Dutch publishing to understand how the print media shaped the cultural landscape of the era. Studying the role of institutions in the promotion and circulation of images like this can tell us much about the public role of art at this time.
