This vintage photograph by Delizy captures a street corner in Morlaix, a place I know only through pictures, but feel as if I've dreamed it. It’s all about the surface, isn’t it? The sepia tones pull me in, making everything feel like it's been dipped in honey. Look at the cross-hatching on the half-timbered buildings. They remind me of the way I layer paint, trying to build up a history on the canvas. The lines aren't perfect; they wobble and shift, which makes it feel so human. I'm drawn to the texture of the stone walls, you can almost feel the roughness, the way the light catches on each imperfection. And the roofs, oh, the roofs, tiled and layered like the scales of some ancient beast. It’s a study in contrasts, the hard lines of the architecture against the soft, organic feel of the materials. Like a Diebenkorn painting, you know? Grids and atmosphere, all at once. It makes you wonder about what else Delizy captured.
