Domenico Malatesta, called Novello (1418-1465) c. 1902
Dimensions 169.69 g, 7.8 cm (3 1/16 in.)
Editor: Here we have a bronze medal of Domenico Malatesta, called Novello. It's an anonymous work, and quite small. I am struck by the contrast between the regal portrait on one side and the more humble scene on the other. How do you interpret that contrast? Curator: It speaks to the complex public image Novello wanted to project. The portrait, with its classical inscription, emphasizes his authority. The reverse, however, shows a scene that could be interpreted as either religious devotion or, perhaps, a victory scene. Editor: So, it's about managing perceptions of power? Curator: Precisely! Renaissance rulers were very deliberate in crafting their image. Medals like this were a key part of that strategy. They served as portable propaganda. Editor: That makes me see it in a whole new light. It’s a carefully constructed narrative. Curator: Exactly. And considering the historical context helps us understand the choices that were made.
