Lucien Pissarro made this painting, *My Studio Garden*, with oil on canvas. I'm imagining him outside with his easel, wrestling with the light and shadow that make up the scene. It's a dance between observation and intuition, trying to make sense of all that green. The surface is built up with layers of these short brushstrokes and strokes of paint. It must have been such a physical process, pushing the paint around, wiping it away, stepping back to see what emerges. I think there is such a beauty in the materiality of painting, and how it can communicate a feeling or an intention. Looking at the way the light filters through the leaves, I'm reminded of Monet and his garden at Giverny. Painting, it's like an ongoing conversation between artists across time. They're responding to each other, inspiring each other, and pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. In the end, this artwork is a deeply personal expression, but also an invitation for us to bring our own experiences and interpretations.
