Curatorial notes

Vincent van Gogh made this oil on canvas painting, entitled "Path Through a Field with Willows," during his time in France. Van Gogh had moved to France in search of an artistic community and a more vibrant landscape. He found this in the fields and farms outside Paris, where the modernizing city gave way to rural life. In his characteristic style, Van Gogh uses thick brushstrokes and bright colors to capture the vitality of the scene. The elevated perspective and path invite the viewer to join him on his walk through the countryside. But, this painting also hints at the growing divide between urban and rural life in France at the time. Van Gogh's choice to focus on the countryside could be seen as a commentary on the rapid industrialization and urbanization of France during the late 19th century. To understand Van Gogh's painting fully, we might look to other paintings from the time, as well as agricultural surveys and social histories of the French countryside. With these resources, we can understand the painting as both a personal expression and a reflection of broader social and cultural forces at play in France at the time.
