Burggraaff’s, Oploop voor een kerk in Antwerpen waar spoken worden gezien, was made in 1826 with etching. In this work, we find ourselves amidst a bustling scene outside a church in Antwerp, where rumors of ghostly apparitions have drawn a crowd. The church, stark against the moonlit sky, becomes a focal point for both curiosity and unease. The artist invites us to consider the power of collective belief and the ways in which fear and superstition can grip a community. It raises questions about the relationship between the seen and unseen, the rational and irrational, and the enduring human fascination with the supernatural. The work shows the church's role in society and its impact on people's emotions and beliefs.
