This New Year’s greeting from the tower watchmen of the Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam, dating from around the mid-19th century, is made from ink on paper. The printmaking process, probably etching or engraving, allowed for the relatively quick reproduction of images and text. Look closely, and you’ll see that the image showcases the tower and the surrounding cityscape. The crisp lines and fine details, achieved through the careful manipulation of metal plates, lend the print a sense of precision and clarity. The printing process allowed for distribution among the citizens, seeking New Year gratuities or a small gift. The watchmen are depicted in the scene, underscoring the labor involved in safeguarding the city. This print serves as a reminder of the skilled trades that flourished alongside fine art, contributing to the rich tapestry of visual culture. It prompts us to consider how different forms of making intersect and inform one another, challenging traditional distinctions between art and craft.
