Joseph Cornell made this box construction, using found materials. The doll emerging from a thicket of twigs and branches is so evocative – it makes me wonder, what kind of world is this for Bebe Marie? Cornell had a real knack for turning everyday objects into little universes, and I imagine him carefully arranging these elements, lost in thought. You can see him experimenting with layers of meaning through texture, color, and the doll’s slightly melancholic expression. The way the twigs encircle her feels both protective and confining, maybe referencing fairy tales, or perhaps something sadder. The conversation between artists across time always amazes me. Cornell’s work definitely speaks to the Surrealists and their interest in dreams and the subconscious, but he’s doing his own thing. He embraces ambiguity, hinting at stories without ever spelling them out. He trusts that viewers will fill in the blanks and bring their own associations to the table.
