This print, made by Israel Silvestre around 1632, presents a view of Lyon. Silvestre was part of a generation of artists who found a ready market for images of French cities. Note the framing device, more like a triumphal arch than a city gate, with its prominent heraldic shield. The inscription announces ‘diverse views of Lyon.’ The artist is self-consciously offering a representation, one produced under royal privilege, as the inscription at the bottom makes clear. Silvestre, like other printmakers, needed official permission to ply his trade, and the image reminds us that artistic production in this period was closely tied to the monarchy. We can see this print as contributing to a developing sense of French identity, particularly amongst the urban elites who were most likely to collect such images. As an art historian, I might consult archives of royal decrees, guild records, and period publications to better understand the social and institutional context in which Silvestre operated. The meaning of art is always contingent on such factors.
