Robert Frank's "Peru 26," is a series of black and white film strips that offer a peek into his photographic process. I can almost hear the clicking of the camera, picture Frank with his eye pressed to the viewfinder, trying to capture a feeling. I imagine him wandering through Peru, camera in hand, alert, improvising as he documents the landscape and the people he encounters. These frames are like little sketches, each one a quick study of light, form, and composition. Look at the stark contrast, the way the light falls across the mountains, or the textures of a building. There is an immediacy here, a directness that is so characteristic of his work. You can see Frank pushing at the edges of photography, experimenting with different angles, contrasts, and subjects. He reminds me of painters like Gerhard Richter, whose work shares this interest in seriality and the exploration of the image. In the end, we're left with a sense of fleeting moments, caught and held, inviting us to contemplate the world through Frank’s eyes.
