About this artwork

Pieter Oosterhuis created this stereograph of the dune water pipeline installation in Leiduin using photography. The architectural forms here speak to the cultural memory of progress. Note the tall chimney and tower dominating the landscape, symbols of technological advancement and the mastery of nature. These shapes echo the ancient obelisks of Egypt, monuments to power and human achievement, transplanted into the industrial age. But consider, too, the water, still and reflective, mirroring the sky. Water, the life-giver, but also a symbol of the subconscious, the depths of the human soul. This duality reminds us that progress is always intertwined with our primordial connection to the natural world. The image is a potent reminder that human endeavors, no matter how innovative, are forever bound to the ancient, cyclical rhythms of nature. It resurfaces again and again, evolving and taking on new meanings in each historical context.
