Juan Gris made this Cubist collage and oil painting, Tabac, Journal Et Bouteille De Vin Rosé. The muted palette and fractured forms give the impression of something broken being glued back together. It’s a kind of material thinking, piecing together meaning bit by bit. Up close you can see how Gris layers different textures and surfaces. Newspaper fragments mix with painted wood grain, playing with reality and representation. Is that a real label pasted onto the canvas, or is it trompe l’oeil? What I love most is the little scrap of paper, tucked in there. It’s so unassuming, yet it anchors the entire composition, like a quiet note in a loud symphony. Gris was really pushing the boundaries of what painting could be, much like Picasso and Braque at the time. The way he integrates everyday objects into his art reminds me a bit of Kurt Schwitters’ collages too. It’s all about seeing the world in new ways, finding beauty in the mundane, and embracing the messiness of it all.
