"Schetsen van Hokusai - deel 6" is a book made by Katsushika Hokusai. Hokusai lived during a time of social and cultural change in Japan, when traditional structures were being challenged by urbanization and exposure to foreign ideas. His work provides a lens through which we can examine the complexities of identity during this era. His focus on everyday life and landscapes broke from traditional representations, embracing a more democratic and accessible vision of art. Katsushika Hokusai lived a long life, working up until his death at almost 90 years old. He famously said "From around the age of 70, I started to get a little better grasp of the real shape of birds and fishes, insects and plants". This book then is more than just sketches; it's a piece of cultural history that shows Hokusai’s journey of understanding the world around him. It reflects the tensions between tradition and modernity, and invites us to consider how identity is shaped by art and history.
