Nicholas Roerich made this landscape painting “Buried Treasures” with oils. The painting has a warm reddish-brown glow to it. Imagine standing where Roerich stood, looking out at that view, trying to capture that light. What choices did he make? The paint is laid on with a direct hand. See how the mountain range in the background appears like a dreamscape, achieved with a soft focus. The rockface shimmers in the reflected light of the water, painted with layered shades of red. I wonder if Roerich was thinking about other landscape painters while he worked, like maybe the Hudson River School painters, or even earlier artists like Turner? It makes me think about how all us artists are in an ongoing conversation, riffing off each other, across time. I love how a painting can be a record of that conversation, and I hope it continues.
