Robert Frank made this gelatin silver print, *11th Street story D*, by intuitively selecting and arranging several strips of 35mm film. Look at the way Frank crops and sequences the frames to create a kind of visual rhythm! It reminds me of the editing process in filmmaking, where individual shots are combined to create a narrative flow, only here Frank is playing with stills. I imagine Frank walking around with his camera, drawn to the fleeting moments of everyday life. The way he captures the reflections and shadows on the wet streets gives the city a sense of grit and realism. You can almost feel the energy of the city in these frames! Painters have always been inspired by photography, and vice versa. Frank’s work has definitely had a lasting impact on how we see and interpret the world around us. It’s a reminder that art is never created in a vacuum, but always in dialogue with other artists and forms of expression.
