Richard Diebenkorn made this drawing of a seated model with what looks like charcoal on paper. You can almost feel the movement of his hand as he built up the image, line by line. I can imagine Diebenkorn, his eyes darting between the model and the page, trying to capture the essence of her pose. There’s a real tenderness in the way he renders her form. The repeated marks that build the shading on the sofa feel really energetic. It makes me think of the way artists like Giacometti used line – trying to find the figure through a kind of searching. The beauty of drawing, like painting, is that it's not about perfection. It's about the conversation between the artist, the subject, and the medium. Each mark informs the next, building into something new. Diebenkorn’s drawings remind us that art is a process, a journey of discovery.
