Editor: Here we have Ferdinand Leenhoff’s bronze sculpture, *Biblis*, made before 1900. It depicts a nude female figure draped with fabric, gazing downwards. There’s an undeniable sadness to it; a real sense of melancholy. What draws your eye in this piece? Curator: My immediate reaction is to consider how the figure embodies a tragic narrative so deeply rooted in Greek mythology and its psychological dimensions. The downward gaze, the clinging fabric – these are symbols of shame, transformation, and loss. What kind of cultural memory, what psychological landscape do you think is expressed here? Editor: I suppose the averted gaze definitely reads as shame, but I hadn't connected that directly to transformation. How do you see that playing out here? Curator: Biblis, consumed by her forbidden love for her brother, wastes away into a spring. Here, that flowing drapery can be interpreted not just as a garment, but as a precursor, a visual echo, to the waters into which she dissolves. This motif echoes Ovid's account in *Metamorphoses*. We, today, may have a hard time grasping how transgressive that love would be viewed within its original setting. Don’t you agree that even just in this sculpture’s time, there would be social implications? Editor: Absolutely! The historical context makes a huge difference. Seeing it as a symbol of both shame *and* a sort of sorrowful metamorphosis gives the statue a richer, more complex story. I was initially stuck on just the surface-level sadness. Curator: Right. That transformation, rendered in bronze, invites us to reflect on enduring themes – taboo desires and punishments – playing out in visual language over millennia. It's fascinating how classical myths remain embedded within the modern psyche, constantly re-emerging through art. Editor: I’ll certainly remember that, next time I see flowing drapery! Thanks for opening my eyes to the many interpretations within this statue.

Biblis is a character who appears in the Metamorphoses by Roman poet Ovid: her love for her brother remained unrequited and eventually she died of desire and was transformed into a spring. Sculptor Ferdinand Leenhoff taught at Amsterdam’s Rijksacademie.
