Editor: This lovely marble sculpture, titled "A Little Girl Holding Kittens" by J.A. Jerichau, was crafted in 1886. She looks so gentle and content, almost reverent in her cradling of those tiny creatures. How would you interpret this work? Curator: Ah, yes, a touching scene rendered in cool, smooth marble. For me, it whispers of fleeting innocence, that tender moment before childhood completely dissolves into the harsh light of adulthood. Notice how the cat leans trustingly against the girl's leg; she is the protector here. It makes me wonder, is this merely a charming genre scene or something deeper? Could the kittens represent vulnerability itself, something we all cradle close and try to safeguard? And that slight downward tilt of her head, what do you make of that? Editor: I see what you mean, that tender watchfulness. It's like she's taking on the weight of responsibility. But what about the realistic style? Does that contrast with the symbolic interpretation? Curator: Not at all! Realism doesn't negate symbolism; it amplifies it. Jerichau invites us into a seemingly everyday scene, making the underlying emotions even more palpable, don't you think? It's as if he's saying, “Look closely, because even in the simplest moments, the most profound truths reside." Now, imagine, if you will, those kittens not as kittens at all but as nascent hopes... how does the sculpture speak to you differently then? Editor: Wow, I didn't think about that! That perspective definitely deepens my appreciation. Thank you! Curator: The beauty of art, isn't it? It's never just what you see but what it makes you feel, what stories it coaxes out of your own soul. A conversation between marble and ourselves.

The artist's six-year old daughter Marie is tenderly holding three small kittens in her skirt while the mother cat brushes up against her legs. The softly polished marble, the touch of fur against naked skin, and the loving gaze of the child combine to create an image that is both sugary and very sensuous. The Western world does not really begin to take an interest in the experiences of children until the late 18th century. Around the same time the cat comes to be regarded in a more positive light as a true pet rather than a casual and somewhat suspect guest. The small statue by Jerichau is in complete contrast to the equestrian statue of Frederik V from the previous century. The depiction is intimate, below eye level, and shows a non-dramatic moment from everyday life: a new way of showing human-animal companionship.
