This small black and white photograph, "Begraafplaats Duitse militairen", captures a cemetery filled with crosses. Imagine the photographer there, framing this shot, what they might have been thinking when they made it. Maybe they were walking through, and were struck by the overwhelming, sombre, geometrical view of the crosses marching into the distance. The grass in the foreground makes me think about nature reclaiming the graves. The trees in the background are blurred, like the edges of grief. It's like a conversation between the past and present, a reflection on loss. The artist is showing you that even in the most solemn and structured of settings, life persists, growing, changing, refusing to be silenced. It reminds me that as artists we are all, in some ways, talking to each other across time.
