Lorenz Rothkranz made this watercolor called “Kas,” sometime during his long life. I can imagine Rothkranz carefully layering his washes, building up tone, and intensifying the play of light and shadow across the surface. But there's something else going on here too. It's not just technical skill; it's the way the artist brings their eye and hand to the material. Rothkranz has given this Kas a life of its own. In his hands, the wood feels like it’s breathing and the light and shadow seem to be constantly shifting. There’s a tension between its solidity and its ethereal presence. It’s as though the artist has captured a moment of transition, a fleeting glimpse of something that is always just beyond our grasp. You know, artists are always in dialogue, riffing off of each other, whether they know it or not. Rothkranz's Kas is just one voice in this never-ending conversation.
