Joakim Skovgaard made this view towards Kallehave Church in 1932 with what looks like a graphite pencil on paper. It’s a sketch, really, a quick impression of a landscape, and I love how simple it is. You can almost feel the hand moving across the paper, those scribbled lines building up the forms of the trees and the church. The texture of the paper shows through, giving it a kind of rawness, like he just wanted to capture the light and shadow in that moment. Look at how the trees are just these fuzzy, almost chaotic marks, but together they create this sense of depth. It feels like he’s not trying to be perfect, just honest. It reminds me a bit of some of Philip Guston’s landscapes, that same kind of searching, almost clumsy line. Art isn’t always about getting it “right,” sometimes it’s about the process, the feeling of making.
