Joakim Skovgaard made this drawing of Kallehave Church with pencil on paper. I can almost feel the soft give of the pencil as he worked, guided by his eye and hand, one mark informing the next. Look at the lines he made, they gently suggest the form of the church and the roundness of the trees, and capture the landscape's quiet mood. I wonder what he was thinking as he sketched – maybe about the play of light on the old stones, or the peacefulness of the Danish countryside. His careful approach is reminiscent of Corot, who was also a master of capturing the subtle nuances of light and atmosphere. These artists, across time, share a common language, engaging in a visual conversation. Drawing is a form of embodied expression which allows for multiple interpretations and meanings to emerge from the landscape.
