Curatorial notes
This is George Hendrik Breitner's study, possibly of an animal, rendered in graphite on paper. The immediacy of graphite lends itself to capturing the ephemeral nature of the animal subject, with lines that define its form, and shadow areas of tone built up by layering and hatching. Graphite is an unforgiving medium and the artist has made no corrections. The sketchbook’s pages were designed to absorb the marks of graphite, creating a receptive ground for Breitner's artistic exploration. We can appreciate the directness of his method, which prioritizes speed and efficiency over elaborate detail. This aligns with the broader socio-economic context of the time, as industrialization and urbanization demanded new ways of seeing and representing the world. In this simple sketch, Breitner elevates the mundane act of observation to a moment of profound artistic expression, blurring the lines between fine art and everyday experience.
