Andy Goldsworthy, born in 1956, made this drawing, "28' Diameter, 6'9" High", using graphite on paper. This plan for a massive stone dome, seen from above and in section, reminds us that even the most monumental artworks start with simple gestures. Goldsworthy is best known for working directly in the landscape, using natural materials to create ephemeral sculptures. The drawing here is fascinating because it highlights the sheer labor that goes into his practice. Each stone, carefully placed, represents hours of physical work. But it also hints at the geological timescale at play – the stones themselves, shaped by millennia, and the dome as a symbol of shelter, echoing ancient building traditions. Goldsworthy's art beautifully collapses any distinction between high art and craft. The simplicity of the materials belies the complexity of the ideas – time, labor, and our relationship to the earth.
