Eugène Delacroix captured this small watercolor painting, “Cliffs near Dieppe,” now at the Musée Marmottan Monet. The painting presents a vista of the sea meeting land under a sky touched by sunset. The cliffs are painted in dark earthy tones, contrasting with the iridescent blues and grays of the water. Delacroix constructs this seascape using layering of color and light to create a sense of depth. The quick, loose brushstrokes suggest movement and ephemerality which destabilize any fixed view. The composition, in its simplicity, evokes a feeling of sublime nature. The horizon line, dividing sea and sky, is a charged boundary between tangible and intangible realms. The painting is less a literal depiction and more an exploration into the emotional and atmospheric possibilities of paint. The handling of light and shadow, and the lack of clear, defined forms, place the emphasis on the subjective experience of the landscape. This artwork continues to invite re-interpretation about our sensory perceptions of nature.
