Richard Earlom created this mezzotint, “Zingend kwartet,” sometime in the late 18th century. This print reproduces a painting by Godfried Schalcken, depicting a singing master and his ensemble, illuminated by candlelight. The singing master is shown instructing his students; who appear to be from privileged backgrounds, in the art of music. In 18th-century Europe, music was not merely entertainment, but a social currency, and a marker of class and education. Musical gatherings served as a backdrop where social connections were forged and solidified. Here, Earlom captures the intimacy of the scene with incredible detail. The expressions of the singers, the texture of their garments, and the soft glow of the candlelight contribute to a rich, emotional experience. It reminds us that art and music are intertwined with social and cultural identities.
