This bronze medal, created by the Italian Renaissance artist Pisanello, depicts Vittorino da Feltre, a renowned humanist educator, in profile. The obverse, or front, of the medal shows Vittorino in a cap and gown, the inscription surrounding him identifying him as "Victorinus Felt." The reverse depicts a pelican, a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice, indicating Vittorino's piety and dedication to his students. This work, created in 1446-1447, is considered a masterpiece of the medallic art, notable for its naturalistic portrayal and fine detail. Pisanello, also known for his paintings, was a pioneer in this new form of Renaissance art, which combined classical themes with contemporary subjects.
