Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph, called "Girl with Hat, Standing in a Forest", with gelatin silver print. The way the light falls across the girl's dress, almost blurring the edges, makes me think about how photography, like painting, is all about capturing light and shadow. It's about a moment, a feeling, not just a picture. Look at the texture in the print. It’s soft, almost dreamy, which makes you feel like you're stepping into a memory. The way the girl is positioned, with her back to us, invites you to imagine what she's thinking, what she's looking at. There’s this little fold in her dress, right by her waist, it’s so subtle but it gives the whole image a sense of movement, as if she might turn around any second. Stieglitz’s photography reminds me a bit of Whistler's paintings – that same focus on atmosphere, on capturing a mood rather than a perfect likeness. It’s a reminder that art, in any form, is really about seeing the world in a new way and sharing that vision with others.
