Curatorial notes

Ursula Schulz-Dornburg made this photograph of an open landscape, printed on a sheet, sometime in the late 20th or early 21st century. Schulz-Dornburg, born in 1938, is known for her photographs of structures at the margins of society, with a particular focus on how architecture reflects the history and culture of a place. In this image, the horizon line stretches across the frame, meeting water on one side and land on the other. There is a feeling of emptiness and desolation, yet the image also evokes feelings of peace and tranquility. A single horse grazes in the distance adding to the melancholic and romantic mood of the photograph. Ursula Schulz-Dornburg’s photographs capture a sense of loss, as well as the hope that something new may emerge from what remains. This photograph is a moving reminder of our shared human experience and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage.
