John William Godward painted "Athenais" with oil on canvas. Godward was a prominent figure in the late Victorian era, a period marked by strict social norms but also a fascination with classical antiquity. Here, Athenais is depicted in a state of undress, draped in a sheer red fabric that reveals more than it conceals. This approach was a way for artists of the time to explore themes of sensuality while ostensibly remaining within the bounds of classical subject matter. The backdrop of a marble frieze with dancing figures, set against a serene landscape, situates her within a timeless, idealized world. The gaze of the model hints at the complex dynamic between artist, model, and viewer. She's there, on display, yet her expression has an emotional depth. Godward, like many of his contemporaries, was attempting to reimagine ideals of beauty, but we might also ask ourselves how these images reflect or challenge the societal norms of his time. By imbuing Athenais with a sense of personal emotion, Godward invites us to reflect on the position of women in society, both then and now.
