Cornelius Annor made this painting, Two Black Maidens, with what looks like acrylic on canvas. The painting style is interesting, isn’t it? There is an almost naive element to it, but it is more knowing than that. The way the artist uses color and pattern creates a visually stimulating and emotionally resonant experience. Look at how the patterns in their clothing contrast with the wallpaper behind them. The flatness of the patterned areas pushes the figures forward into our space, while other areas recede. It feels both carefully planned and haphazard. Take, for example, the lower left corner where the patterned dress spills onto the floor. The floor is painted with visible texture. This is a place where the painting really feels like a thing. Seeing this, I am reminded of work by artists like Njideka Akunyili Crosby, who creates layered and collaged surfaces. Art is an ongoing conversation, isn't it? It's about opening up possibilities, not closing them down.
