Editor: Right now we’re looking at "Flashback, Flashforward" created by Joshua Flint in 2020, a blend of acrylic and oil on canvas. I’m struck by the hazy quality, like a dream half-remembered. The figures almost blend into the landscape. How do you see this piece? Curator: Ah, Joshua Flint. His work always whispers to me of those fleeting moments between wakefulness and sleep, where memories blur with imagined realities. Do you notice how the figures seem both present and dissolving, as if they're caught in the currents of time itself? I imagine this very piece is like stumbling upon a hidden glade where figures linger on the periphery of remembrance. Editor: That's interesting, I like that reading of it. Do you think that dream-like quality is intentional? Curator: Absolutely! Look at the way Flint handles the paint: those blurred edges, the layering of translucent washes, almost as if he's trying to capture not the solidity of the world, but its ephemerality. Like trying to grab hold of smoke... Can't be done! Does it evoke a particular emotion for you? Nostalgia, perhaps? Editor: Definitely a sense of nostalgia, but also a bit of melancholy, maybe? I can see that sense of timelessness now that you mention it. Curator: And isn’t that the magic of art? To take us somewhere outside the confines of our everyday perceptions? "Flashback, Flashforward", as Flint so aptly titled it, invites us to consider how we perceive memory and how memory changes us in turn. What a delight to unravel together! Editor: Yeah, it really does get you thinking. Thanks for your perspective!
