Oleksandr Aksinin created this bookplate for Volodya Polishuk in 1982 using etching. At first glance, the monochromatic palette and dense composition of intricate details in an oval format might evoke a dreamlike atmosphere. Looking closer, the structural arrangement of the bookplate reveals a symbolic language. A whimsical chariot, pulled by two horses in opposing directions, becomes a stage for a figure with an elongated hat, flanked by objects resembling light bulbs, arrows and other figures. The chariot's wheel, adorned with complex patterns, grounds the fantastical scene. This composition prompts us to consider the underlying codes at play. The opposing directions of the horses may represent internal conflicts, while the figure and objects could symbolize knowledge and creativity. This bookplate transcends its functional purpose, inviting viewers to decode its visual metaphors and contemplate the relationship between image and meaning, author and reader, and art and interpretation.
