Endre Bartos painted "Sugovica River in Mourning" with oils, and you can really feel that process in the finished image. It's less about a photorealistic view of the river, and more about the act of painting itself. The texture is amazing – thick, almost sculptural in places. I keep coming back to the way the black paint of the trees sits so heavily on the canvas. There's this real tension between the dark, solid forms of the trees and the fluid, dreamlike landscape around them. The surprising choice of pinks and purples against the fiery oranges creates this incredible emotional space, like a memory tinged with sadness. It reminds me of Milton Avery's landscapes, that same simplification of form and focus on feeling over detail, but with a uniquely Eastern European sensibility. It's a painting that stays with you, not because of what it shows, but how it makes you feel.
