Editor: This photograph by Jack Gould, titled "Untitled (two cats wearing hooded capes and boxing gloves in small boxing ring)," features two cats in costume inside a boxing ring. It's unexpectedly theatrical! What do you make of it? Curator: It's a fascinating study in anthropomorphism. Consider the hooded capes and boxing gloves; they invoke images of human contests of strength and will. What cultural memories do these symbols trigger for you? Editor: I guess I think of sportsmanship, rivalry, and maybe even a bit of theatricality from wrestling. Curator: Precisely. The artist uses these symbols to project human attributes onto the cats, creating a humorous yet thought-provoking commentary on human nature. Perhaps a lighthearted jab at our own tendencies? Editor: That’s a fun interpretation! I definitely see the humour in it now. Curator: It also made me reflect on how we project narratives and emotions onto animals.
