Theo Nieuwenhuis made this pencil drawing of a warrior with a shield, taking inspiration from a relief. I can imagine Theo hunched over this drawing, squinting at the relief, trying to capture the weight and texture of the stone with just a few well-placed lines. It looks like he’s really focused on the way the light hits the warrior’s shield, that simple circle becoming a focal point. The pressure of the pencil seems to vary, as if searching for the perfect balance between detail and suggestion. Look at the warrior's legs, like a quick shorthand. I wonder what he was thinking about as he drew? Was he interested in the historical context of the relief, or was he more drawn to the formal challenge of translating a three-dimensional object into a two-dimensional image? It reminds me of other artists who riff on classical forms. It's all one big conversation, right? Each artist responding to what came before, adding their own little twist. What a great drawing, it leaves so much open to interpretation.
