George Fiske captured this photograph, "Weg met karrensporen in een bos in de Verenigde Staten" (Away with cart tracks in a forest in the United States), using a monochromatic palette to emphasize the textural contrasts within the forest. The composition leads our eyes along the diverging cart tracks, a strong diagonal element drawing us into the heart of the woodland. The linear quality of the path is juxtaposed with the organic, almost chaotic arrangement of trees and foliage. Light filters unevenly through the canopy, creating a play of shadows that dances across the rugged surfaces of tree bark and dense undergrowth. This contrast serves to question the binary of nature versus culture, as the tracks, a distinctly human intervention, blend into their surroundings. Notice how Fiske uses the materiality of the photographic print itself to enhance the tactile nature of the forest floor and the imposing rock on the right. This photo thus becomes a commentary on the way we perceive nature.
