Cornelis Saftleven sketched "Extending Man with Dog and a Walker with Staff" using graphite, capturing scenes from 17th-century Dutch life. The composition divides into two distinct registers: the upper showing a figure stretched out beside foliage, the lower depicting a man playing an instrument next to a dog, positioned by a fence. Saftleven uses hatching and contour lines to delineate form and texture. The effect gives the figures a sense of volume, while also capturing the transient quality of a sketch. We see Saftleven engaging with the semiotic possibilities of his medium. Through line and shading, Saftleven captures not just the appearance, but also perhaps, the essence of his subjects. In terms of structuralism, the composition highlights how Saftleven frames his subjects, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationship between individuals and their environment. Notice the contrast between the sprawling figure in the upper register, and the more enclosed scene below. This contrast destabilizes a singular reading, encouraging us to see each scene as a microcosm of human experience.
