Vilhelm Lundstrom made this drawing of a seated female model with charcoal on paper. You know, looking at the varied pressure of the charcoal, you can almost feel Lundstrom’s hand moving across the page. It’s so immediate! The smudgy, soft texture gives her body a kind of hazy, dreamlike quality. See how the lines aren’t perfectly defined? This ambiguity invites you to project your own feelings onto the figure. There is something about the marks around her face, they look less defined, they give the impression of being unresolved. And that one strong contour from the armpit down the side of her body, has a real confidence to it, so juicy! For me this piece shares a sensibility with the early drawings of Picasso, where line and form seem to emerge from a place of pure feeling. Ultimately, it reminds us that art is a process of discovery, a conversation between the artist, the model, and the medium itself.
