"Smaak" (Taste), a 17th-century engraving by Pieter de Jode I, depicts two women, one seated in a lavish interior and the other in a garden, emphasizing the contrast between the cultivated and natural worlds. The woman indoors holds a piece of fruit, while the woman outdoors carries a cornucopia overflowing with bounty. The scene exemplifies the artistic genre of allegory, where symbolism is used to convey deeper meaning. De Jode I was a prolific printmaker and draughtsman known for his portraits and historical scenes, and this work reflects his meticulous style and attention to detail. This print is part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
