This sheet of thirteen images for an almanac was created by F. J. Dorgez around the late 18th century, using etching on paper. These vignettes offer a glimpse into the social norms, gender roles, and class distinctions of the time. Each scene presents a narrative snapshot, with men and women interacting in various settings: domestic interiors, garden landscapes and city streets. The interactions between figures, and their attire, reflect the rigid societal structures of 18th-century Europe, where status and gender dictated behavior and opportunities. Courtship, commerce, and leisure activities are depicted with a formal elegance, but there is also a sense of the artificiality of such constructs, hinting at the underlying tensions and power dynamics at play. Consider how the artist uses visual cues to reinforce the era's social hierarchy. This work asks us to reflect on the ways in which identity is constructed and performed within specific historical and cultural contexts. The artwork invites us to contemplate our own roles and relationships within the structures of contemporary society.
