This woven straw hat with grosgrain ribbon was made by Gérard Albouy at an unknown date. I think it's amazing how a simple object like a hat can be elevated into art. The material, woven straw, is humble, but the craftsmanship is evident. It's all about how you approach the making, right? The hat itself has this sturdy, grounded feel, but then you have this playful, almost extravagant ribbon detail. It's a fascinating contrast, like a conversation between the serious and the whimsical. I find myself drawn to the way the ribbon is tied; it's a controlled explosion of fabric, dark and mysterious against the light straw. It adds a layer of texture and depth that really catches the eye. This hat reminds me a little of the work of Claes Oldenburg, in that he took everyday things and made them extraordinary. Art is an ongoing conversation, and it's all about finding new ways to see the world.
