Curator: This is John Walker's "Page 18, State I," an etching in the Tate collection. The image size is roughly 25 by 20 centimeters. Editor: It appears almost skeletal. Curator: I see a study in contrast: the controlled chaos of lines forming the figure against the stark white space. The cross-hatching creates depth, yet the figure remains strangely flat. Editor: It evokes a sense of confinement, doesn't it? I am drawn to the visual weight; the figure seems burdened, almost fetal, which gives it symbolic weight that goes back to ancient depictions of death and rebirth. Curator: Interesting... I'm more compelled by the abstract qualities, by how Walker utilizes line and tone to create visual tension.
