This watercolor on paper, by an anonymous artist, presents a striking parrot tulip. The composition is simple, almost austere, yet the flower itself explodes with dynamic energy. Note how the artist contrasts the smooth, pale green leaves and stem with the ruffled, almost flamboyant petals of the bloom. These petals are a riot of color – yellows bleed into reds, creating a sense of movement and instability. The artist captures a sense of tension between the controlled, botanical study and the wild, untamed nature of the flower. The form destabilizes any fixed idea of floral beauty. The very choice of the parrot tulip, a cultivar known for its irregular shape, further challenges traditional notions of order and symmetry. Look at the delicate lines and translucent washes of color; these reveal a plant that is both scientifically observed and artistically interpreted. It is a testament to the beauty found in the unconventional.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté's phenomenal skill as a botanical illustrator was clearly equaled by his skill as a diplomat, for he enjoyed the patronage of both Marie Antoinette and Josephine Bonaparte. Many of the lilies illustrated in Les Liliacées were cultivated in Josephine's large greenhouse-heated by twelve coal-fired stoves-at her country residence Malmaison.
