Germaine Richier made this bronze sculpture, *Le grand homme de la nuit*, sometime during her career. I can almost see her working on this figure, building it up and tearing it down, adding wings, scraping away the surface and exposing it to the elements. What would it have been like to coax this creature into being? This figure looks like a hybrid being, neither human nor animal, but something in between. It reminds me of works by other artists who explore similar themes of metamorphosis and transformation. I wonder if she was thinking of other winged figures in art history like Icarus, or maybe she was just responding to something she saw in nature. Ultimately, I think *Le grand homme de la nuit* speaks to something deep within the human psyche, and the ongoing conversation between art, nature, and the imagination. It embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
