Curatorial notes
This mezzotint, "De Reuk," was made by Jacob Gole around the turn of the 18th century. The print presents a scene dominated by the interplay of light and shadow, creating a palpable sense of depth and texture. The composition centres on a seated woman receiving flowers from a gentleman, while an incense burner billows smoke nearby. Gole masterfully uses the mezzotint technique to achieve rich tonal gradations, with the velvety blacks contrasting sharply against the highlights on the figures' faces and garments. This contrast draws our eye to the textures and details within the print. The billowing smoke functions almost as a curtain, heightening the atmospheric intensity and underscoring the print’s thematic focus on sensory experience. Through its formal qualities, "De Reuk" invites us to contemplate the complex relationship between sight, smell, and the broader sensory world, reflecting a keen awareness of how art can engage with perception and meaning.
