This is a photograph by Robert Frank; it’s called "40 Fotos, page 34" and it's an image of boats on water beneath a heavy, clouded sky. I can imagine Frank, looking through the lens, waiting for the clouds to shift just right, to capture that particular mood. There's a kind of stillness here, but it’s charged with the potential energy of a storm. The tones are somber but they’re also somehow hopeful, with those streaks of light breaking through. It reminds me of Turner, that quality of light, and the drama of the sea. The composition is divided between the expanse of the sky and the stillness of the water, creating a tension. Maybe he was thinking about man's relationship to nature, or about impermanence, the fleeting quality of time. Painters and photographers alike are always chasing light, trying to capture a moment, a feeling, and turn it into something lasting.
